Kenya: Heavy rain advisory issued for coastal region through May 12

Heavy rain advisory issued for coastal region May 8-12; transportation disruptions likely over coming days

Warning

Event

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) issued a heavy rain advisory for the coastal region between Wednesday, May 8, and Sunday, May 12. According to KMD, the counties Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale are forecast to experience heavy rainfall and strong winds between May 8-10. The counties of Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, Taita-Taveta, and the southern portion of Tana-River will see similar adverse weather conditions between May 11-12.

Transportation disruptions and road closures, due to flooding, are possible in affected areas over the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate flooding, telecommunications and power outages, and widespread transportation disruptions (including due to flight disruptions and road obstructions), stockpile sufficient food, water, and medical supplies, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
