Papua New Guinea: 5.5-magnitude earthquake strikes off New Britain June 1

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.5-magnitude earthquake off of Papua New Guinea's New Britain island on Saturday, June 1, at approximately 04:50 (local time). The quake struck approximately 112 km (70 mi) southwest of Kokopo (East New Britain province) at a depth of 24 km (15 mi). No tsunami advisory was issued as of 05:00. Details regarding possible damage have not been reported. Further aftershocks and associated damage are possible in the coming hours and days.
