Afghanistan: Heightened threat warning during Eid al-Fitr June 4-7
Increased threat of complex attacks in Kabul during the Eid al-Fitr period (June 4-7); political demonstrations also expected

Heightened security measures are expected in Kabul over the coming days during the Eid al-Fitr period (Tuesday, June 4, through Friday, June 7) due to an increased threat of complex attacks by militant groups. The threat level will remain elevated over the next two weeks as militant groups resume operations after Eid. Multiple threats against international agencies and other high value targets have been reported and some agencies have implemented movement restrictions as a precaution. Increased security measures, such as the deployment of additional security personnel, roadblocks and checkpoints, and security cordons, are likely around sensitive locations.
Large-scale demonstrations are also possible during the Eid period. According to local sources, political groups are planning to hold rallies in Kabul to protest the extension of President Ashraf Ghani’s and the National Unity Government’s (NUG) term. There is a risk that the protests will turn violent, or that militants may target large gatherings. Security forces may be deployed pre-emptively to prevent demonstrations as a precaution.
Context
Multiple bombings were carried out in Kabul between Thursday, May 30, and Monday, June 3. The attacks targeted Afghan government facilities, international security personnel, and civilians. Both the Taliban and the Islamic State (IS) have claimed responsibly for the bombings.
Taliban and IS militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.
