Scientists record deep 7.3-magnitude earthquake in the Banda Sea on June 24; no tsunami warning issued

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in the Banda Sea 320 km (200 mi) south-southeast of Teluk Ambon (Maluku province) on Monday, June 24. The quake struck around 11:53 (local time) at a depth of 208 km (130 mi). No tsunami warning was issued. Further aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days. In the event of a tsunami, the coasts of Wetar, Buru, Ambon, Seram, Kai Kecil, Trangan, Yamdena, Babar, and Damar islands may be affected, along with the southwest coast of West Papua province.
