Japan: PTWC says no tsunami threat after 6.4-magnitude earthquake June 18 /update 1

Event

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) reported there is no threat of a destructive tsunami following a 6.4-magnitude earthquake which struck off the northwestern coast of Honshu on Tuesday night (local time), June 18. The Japan Meteorological Agency had earlier issued a "tsunami advisory" for Yamagata prefecture, Niigata prefecture, Sado Island, and the Noto area (Ishikawa prefecture), forecasting that tsunami waves of 0.2-1 meter (0.7-1.3 feet) would impact the shores of the abovementioned areas. Small tsunami waves of 10 cm (4 in) above tide level were reported on the shores of northwestern Honshu following the earthquake, with no consequent damages immediately reported.

However, the preceding earthquake reportedly caused damages to roads and has prompted the suspension of some rail services, including high-speed rail, in affected areas on Honshu. Power outages also affected thousands of customers across Yamagata and Niigata prefectures following the earthquake. Several minor injuries were reported.

Forecast rainfall may impede recovery efforts over the coming hours. Lingering transportation disruptions are to be expected in affected areas. Aftershocks are possible across the region over the coming hours and days.  

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor developments, prepare for aftershocks and lingering transportation disruptions and power outages, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
