A police vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED) in Wajir county on Saturday, June 15, leaving at least ten police officers dead. The police officers were reportedly seeking suspected Al-Shabaab militants who kidnapped three police reservists in Konton on Friday, June 14.
Similar incidents are possible near the Kenyan-Somali border over the near term.
Context
Al-Shabaab continues to regularly carry out attacks near the porous border with Somalia as well as in coastal areas in retaliation for Kenya's participation in a multinational force fighting Al-Shabaab in Somalia since 2011.
