Kyrgyzstan: Opposition group plans rally in Bishkek June 8
Social Democratic Party (SDPK) plans rally in Bishkek on June 8 despite government ban due to upcoming international meeting June 13-14; heightened security measures and localized disruptions expected
Event
The opposition Social Democratic Party (SDPK) is planning to hold a rally in the capital Bishkek on Saturday, June 8, despite a temporary ban on demonstrations. Supporters of former President Almazbek Atambayev are planning to gather outside of the Media Forum building at 11:00 (local time) to demand the release of politicians accused of corruption. The Interior Ministry implemented a ban on rallies in the capital from Saturday, June 1, through Thursday, June 20, due to the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting. Additional security personnel have been deployed into the city and the police have reportedly been authorized to use force to disperse groups violating the ban.
The SCO summit will be held from Thursday, June 13, through Friday, June 14, in Bishkek. During the meeting, heightened security measures will be implemented throughout the capital, including road closures and additional checkpoints around hotels and event venues. Temporary restrictions of vehicle movement around Manas International Airport (FRU) and along the highway between FRU and Bishkek will be in place to facilitate the movement of visiting dignitaries. Traffic disruptions and an increased demand for accommodations are also anticipated in the capital.
Advice
Individuals in Bishkek, particularly on June 8 and during the SCO meeting, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
