Papua New Guinea: Thousands displaced from volcanic eruption June 26

Event

Mount Ulawun (West New Britain province) erupted around 07:00 (local time) on Wednesday, June 26, causing thousands of people to flee and affecting flights in the region. The resultant ash cloud rose around 13 km (42,000 ft). An estimated 5000 people fled their homes in the vicinity. Flights at Hoskins Airport (HKN) near Kimbe were reportedly canceled and lava flows had cut access along the island's main highway at three locations. Continued eruptions are possible along with associated disruptions.

Individuals in New Britain and the neighboring islands are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the area, anticipate transportation disruptions, including flight cancelations, confirm flight and other travel reservations, wear respiratory masks and other protective clothing if in the affected areas, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. evacuations).
