Afghanistan: Unconfirmed reports of complex attack in Kabul July 28
Unconfirmed reports of complex attack in Kabul July 28, leaving at least six people wounded; further details still emerging
Event
A complex attack has targeted Kabul's PD4 area, near the office of the Afghanistan Green Trend, around 16:40 (local time) on Sunday, July 28, according to emerging, unconfirmed reports. At least six people were reported to have been wounded when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) detonated near Shaheed Circle in Kabul's PD4 area. Security forces have reportedly cordoned off roads leading to Shaheed Circle; gunfire has been heard in the area, with multiple gunmen suspected to be active.
A heightened security presence is to be expected in the area over the coming hours.
Context
Taliban and Islamic State (IS) militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.
Advice
Individuals in Kabul are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the area, liaise with their security partner, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home government.
The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
