Large eruption of Mount Stromboli (Sicily region) July 3; at least one person killed

The National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology (INGV) has recorded a large eruption at Mount Stromboli (Sicily region) on Wednesday, July 3. Authorities announced that Stromboli's eruption sent a large cloud of ash 9 km (5.5 mi) into the air and started several fires across Stromboli island. At least one person - a tourist hiking on the island - has reportedly died. Evacuations of the island have also been ordered. There were no immediate reports of flight disruptions.
Further eruptions are possible in the coming days and weeks and flight disruptions cannot be ruled out in the event of a larger eruption.
Context
Mount Stromboli is one of Italy's most active volcanoes, with commonly occurring mild to moderate eruptions. The National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology (INGV) described the July 3 eruption as a "paroxysmal eruption."
