5.7-magnitude earthquake strikes off Hachijō-jima July 30, with no tsunami warning immediately issued; aftershocks possible over the coming hours and days

A 5.7-magnitude offshore earthquake struck some 75 km (46 mi) east-southeast of Hachijō-jima early (local time) on Tuesday, July 30. The quake was recorded at a depth of 67 km (42 mi). No tsunami warning, advisory, watch, or threat was immediately issued by the US Tsunami Warning System.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected region over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor the situation and be prepared for aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
