Mozambique: Joint police operations planned in Cabo Delgado /update 1

Event

Mozambican and Tanzanian officials announced plans to hold joint security operations in northern Cabo Delgado province on Tuesday, July 2, after another deadly militant attack was carried out in the region. Suspected Islamist gunmen killed 11 people, including nine Tanzanians, during an attack on the village of Ntola (Palma district) on Wednesday, June 26. Following the incident, police officials from both countries agreed to run operations along the border between Mozambique and Tanzania.

A heightened security presence is anticipated in Cabo Delgado province in the coming weeks. Further militant attacks are also possible in the near term.

Context

Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Al-Shabaab) is believed to be responsible for carrying out attacks against local businesses, government installations, and security forces in Cabo Delgado province since October 2017.
