Norway: Landslide blocks parts of E39 highway in Jølster July 30
Heavy rains cause landslides in Jølster municipality on July 30, blocking parts of the E39 highway; power outages and evacuations reported in the area
Event
Recovery efforts are ongoing in the Jølster and Førde municipalities as of early Wednesday, July 31, after heavy storms hit the area on Tuesday, July 30. Landslides along the E39 highway have blocked traffic along a 32 km (24 mi) section of road between Skei and Moskog. According to media reports, around 150 residents in both municipalities have been evacuated due to flooding and landslides. At least 1500 customers in Førde lost power due to the storm and it is unclear when service will be restored as technicians are unable to get around some of the closed roads. Flood warnings for the area are in affect through July 31, and additional flash flooding in isolated areas is possible in the coming hours. Traffic disruptions are expected to continue in the coming days as emergency personnel clear debris from the roads.
Advice
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate flooding and associated transportation disruptions (including road closures), and remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of moving water is enough to knock over an adult.
