Officials confirm at least eight deaths from the earthquakes that struck near Itbayat (Batanes province) on July 27; recovery efforts ongoing

Local officials have confirmed that at least eight people were killed and over 60 injured after two earthquakes struck north of Itbayat (Batanes province) on the morning (local time) of Saturday, July 27. A 5.4-magnitude quake hit at approximately 04:16 followed by a 5.9-magnitude at 07:37. According to officials, homes and buildings were damaged and some collapsed following the earthquakes. Several smaller aftershocks also occurred throughout the morning. Recovery efforts are ongoing and disaster response teams have been deployed. Further aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor developments, prepare for aftershocks, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger.
