Local independent candidates call for daily protests in Moscow July 23; next rally planned on July 27

Warning

Event

On Tuesday, July 23, independent candidates for local elections have called for daily protests to be held outside the mayor's office in Moscow. They seek to denounce the rejection of several candidates in the upcoming Moscow City Duma elections and to call on election officials to include more opposition candidates on the ballot. The protests are scheduled to start at 12:00 (local time).

Protesters also vowed to hold a demonstration on Saturday, July 27, if their demands are not met. The demonstration is expected to take place outside the City Hall at 14:00.

A heightened security presence is likely around any demonstration sites over the coming days and weeks. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Related protests are expected in other urban centers across the country.

Context

A massive protest was held on July 20 in Moscow to denounce a decision by the Moscow City Election Committee to exclude opposition candidates from the September 8 city council election. Similar protests were held in July 14 and July 15 in the capital. The police have reportedly arrested some demonstrators.

Advice

Individuals in Moscow are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
