Tropical Depression Danas forecast to hit Taiwan July 18-19; heavy rainfall, consequent flooding, and associated transportation and business disruptions likely

Warning

Event

Tropical Depression Danas is forecast to move northward over the coming days and hit Taiwan on Thursday, July 18, into Friday, July 19, likely packing tropical-storm-force maximum sustained winds of 75 kph (47 mph) and bringing heavy rainfall to the island. Rainfall totals are forecast to exceed 20 cm (8 in) in Hualien, Taitung, and Pingtung counties, with lower rainfall totals likely over central Taiwan. Forecasts as of Tuesday, July 16, indicate Danas will likely make landfall in Hualien county.

Consequent flooding and associated business and transportation disruptions (e.g. flight delays and cancelations) are to be expected in Taiwan over the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in Taiwan are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate flooding, telecommunications and power outages, and widespread transportation disruptions (including due to flight disruptions and road obstructions), stockpile sufficient food, water, and medical supplies, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
