US: Heavy rain followed by intense heat forecast for Midwest, East July 15-21 /update 1

Meteorologists predict heavy rainfall followed by intense heat for the Midwest and east coast areas of the US from Monday, July 15, through Sunday, July 21. The remnants of Hurricane Barry are forecast to continue to move north-northeast up the Mississippi River valley and toward Ohio during the first half of the week, bringing heavy rain to the area. There is a risk of flooding and associated disruptions, particularly along the lower Mississippi River valley south of St. Louis (Missouri state).

Following the storm, a major heat wave is forecast to settle in until at least Sunday, July 21. Hot and humid weather is predicted for the Midwest, especially the western Midwest states, and east coast, from Washington (DC) to Maine state. Lows are expected to remain above 24°C (75°F) with highs around or above 34°C (93°F) for much of these areas.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate flooding, hot weather, and associated disruptions, avoid strenuous activity or spending time outdoors, drink plenty of water, and avoid dehydrating liquids, such as alcoholic, sugary, or caffeinated drinks. Seek immediate medical attention if exhibiting symptoms of heat stroke, such as nausea, confusion, headache, rapid and strong pulse, and dry skin.
