US: Heavy rains and flash floods cause road closures in Washington, DC area July 8

Heavy rains and flash floods hit many parts of the Washington, DC metropolitan area on Monday, July 8, causing widespread road closures and public transportation disruptions. Various roads have been closed due to flooding and associated damages (i.e. sinkholes, road collapses), including Canal Road NW and I-395 access ramps at 7th Street SW, among others, in Washington, DC. Road closures have also been reported across Arlington County, Fairfax County, and Alexandria (Virginia state) as well as Montgomery County and Prince George's County (Maryland state). Floodwaters also reportedly caused significant disruptions on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) network. 

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flash flood warning until approximately 14:00 (local time) across the area. Further inclement weather and associated transportation disruptions are to be expected in the area over the coming days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions prior to setting out, budget additional travel time, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. It is important to note that that walking or driving through floodwaters can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
