Warning

Event

As of 21:30 (local time) on Saturday, July 13, over 42,000 customers are without power in the Westside of Manhattan (New York City). According to emergency officials, outages have been reported from Midtown Manhattan to the Upper West Side. The New York Fire Department has received multiple calls of individuals being stuck in elevators and traffic lights are not functioning in the affected areas. Subway trains are bypassing some stations and travelers are being advised to consider using local bus service instead of the trains. The cause of the blackout is being investigated but initial reports indicate it was caused by a manhole fire earlier in the day.

Lingering transportation and business disruptions are to be expected in Manhattan over the coming hours until power is restored.

Advice

Individuals in Manhattan (New York City) are advised to monitor developments, conserve power on battery-operated devices, prepare for transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
