Zimbabwe: Calls for general strike July 1-5

The Tajamuka/Sesijikile youth group has called for a general strike to take place from Monday, July 1, through at least Friday, July 5, to denounce the current economic situation. The strike comes as the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe announced on Monday, June 24, that the use of multiple currencies would end effective immediately, and as the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has increased load-shedding with some areas reportedly going for 19 hours without power as of July 1.

Furthermore, despite having distanced themselves from the youth strike, the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), has called for a general strike to take place in the coming days, although the exact date has not yet been announced.

Significant disruptions to business and daily life activities are likely across the country in the coming days. Associated protests are also possible in the coming days and weeks.

Individuals in Zimbabwe are advised to monitor developments, keep battery-operated devices fully charged when possible, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, exercise caution when driving or crossing streets if traffic signals are not functioning, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
