Afghanistan: Dozens of people wounded in Kabul bombing August 7 /update 2

Suspected car bomb explosion wounds at least 95 people in Kabul on August 7; recovery operations ongoing

Warning

Event

At least 95 people were wounded after a suspected vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) detonated near a police headquarters in the PD 6 area of Kabul on Wednesday, August 7. The blast occurred around 09:05 during rush hour. According to government officials, earlier reports of gunfire near the explosion were false. The Taliban later claimed responsibility for the bombing. Recovery efforts are ongoing in the area.

The attack occurred shortly after security forces concluded multiple operations targeting suspected Islamic State (IS) militants in in Bagrami district and the Qasaba area of PD15.

Context

Taliban and Islamic State (IS) militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.

Advice

Individuals in Kabul province are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid the affected area, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities or their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
