Afghanistan: Security operation ongoing in Kabul August 7

Police launch raids in three areas of Kabul on August 7 targeting Islamic State (IS) members; engagement between militants and security forces ongoing

Warning

Event

Security forces launched a series of raids targeting suspected Islamic State (IS) militants in multiple locations in Kabul during the early morning hours (local time) of Wednesday, August 7. Operations were conducted in Bagrami district and the Qasaba area of PD15. As of 08:45 (local time), militants are reportedly engaging security forces at two locations. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions (including road closures and checkpoints) are anticipated in Bagrami and Qasaba over the coming hours. Avoid the area of the operations.

Context

Taliban and Islamic State (IS) militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.

Advice

Individuals in Kabul province are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid the affected area, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities or their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
