Over 100 people marched through Brisbane's Central Business District (CBD) starting at approximately 08:00 (local time) on Wednesday, August 28. The protest started at the intersection of Edward and Queen streets before participants walked up Alice Street to Parliament House. Police officers escorted the demonstrators and diverted traffic along the route, causing significant disruptions during peak commuting hours. Demonstrators gathered outside of the Parliament House at 09:00. Residual traffic and public transportation delays are expected in the coming hours as the protesters disperse. Further association demonstrations are possible in the near term.
Context
The protest was organized by climate change activists as well as local elected representatives. Brisbane’s mayor had attempted to prevent the march, claiming that it would lead to serious public disorder. However, the Magistrates Court ruled allowed the demonstration to go ahead as planned.
