Georgia: Elections in Abkhazia set for August 25 /update 1

Presidential elections in the Georgian breakaway region of Abkhazia are slated for Sunday, August 25. Elections were originally scheduled to be held on July 21; however, the vote was postponed by President Raul Khajimba following the sudden illness of opposition leader Aslan Bzhania and associated protests in April-May.

A heightened security presence, as well as associated political protests and transportation disruptions, are likely leading up to, during, and following the elections.
