On Sunday, August 18, police officials in Indonesia reported that two police officers were wounded in an attack on a police station in Surabaya (East Java province) by a suspected Islamist militant on Saturday, August 17. The suspect was shot and arrested after the attack; the suspect apparently acted alone and was reportedly radicalized by reading online material by the ideological leader of Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), Aman Abdurahman.
Though the Indonesian government has arrested hundreds so far in 2019 under new anti-terrorism laws implemented after the May 2018 Surabaya attacks (to which JAD is linked), further militant attacks are possible over the near term despite the increased security measures.
