Japan: 6.1-magnitude earthquake strikes east of Aomori prefecture August 29

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit off the east coast of Aomori prefecture on August 29; no immediate tsunami threat

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck approximately 141 km (88 mi) east-northeast of Hachinohe (Aomori prefecture) around 08:46 (local time) on Thursday, August 29. The quake occurred at a depth of about 17 km (11 mi). According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), there is no threat of a tsunami from the earthquake.

Aftershocks are possible in the region over the coming hours.

Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
