Japan: Storm warnings issued for southern Japan August 14 /update 2

Event

Storm warnings are in effect for southern Japan as Severe Tropical Storm Krosa continues moving towards the coast as of 13:00 (local time) on Wednesday, August 14. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued warnings for the prefectures of Kagoshima, Miyazaki, Kochi, and Oita. Krosa is expected to bring heavy rains, strong winds, and high waves on the islands of Kyushu, Amami, and Shikoku in the coming hours and days.

As of 13:00 on August 14, Krosa is located approximately 250 km (155 mi) southeast of Tanegashima (map here). The storm is moving north-northwest at 15 kph (9 mph) and is forecast to make landfall on Thursday, August 15. Krosa currently has maximum sustained winds of 100 kph (62 mph) and gusts up to 148 kph (92 mph). Flooding, landslides, mudslides, and strong storm surge are possible in southern and western areas as the storm moves through the region. Power outages and transportation disruptions, including flight delays and road closures, may also occur.
