Japan: Typhoon Krosa forecast to hit southern Japan August 14
Typhoon Krosa slowly moves towards southern Japan, forecast to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and storm surge by August 14
Event
A third typhoon is forecast to impact southern Japan by Wednesday, August 14, as it slowly moves north through the Philippine Sea. As of the early morning hours (local time) of Sunday, August 11, Typhoon Krosa is located approximately 1450 km (795 mi) southeast of Iwakuni, Japan (map here). According to the Japan Meteorologist Agency (JMA), the storm has maximum sustained winds at 120 kph (75 mph) but has remained almost stationary. However, Krosa is forecast to continue moving north and bring heavy rains and damaging winds to parts of Shikoku, Kyushu, and western Honshu. Flooding, landslides, mudslides, and strong storm surge are possible along southern coastal areas as the storm moves through the region. Power outages and transportation disruptions, including flight delays and road closures, may also occur.
Advice
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
