Mauritania: Deadly flooding impacts southern cities as of August 28

Torrential rains in southern and eastern Mauritania has caused significant flooding and damages in the region as of Wednesday, August 28. Rains started on Saturday, August 24, with the city of Sélibaby experiencing some of the worst damage. Around 20 cm (8 in) of rain has fallen in the city, destroying homes and damaging the bridge that links Sélibaby to the western part of the country. Significant rainfall was also reported in Hassi Chegar, Danguerimou, Sabouciré, Khabou, Boully, and Ehle Salem Khal. At least three people have been killed, and the death toll may rise as recovery efforts continue in the region. The military and rescue teams have been deployed to repair damaged infrastructure and assist people affected by the flooding. Disruptions to basic services, including drinking water, electricity, and healthcare have also been reported, particularly in Sélibaby.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions and flight reservations before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
