Philippines: Severe weather warnings due to Tropical Depression Hanna August 4-6

Event

The Philippine meteorological agency issued severe weather warnings at 11:00 (local time) on Sunday, August 4, due to the north-northwestward movement of Tropical Depression Hanna. Extreme flood warnings are in effect for Central Luzon as well as a severe flood warning for Calabarzon. The storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall over Metro Manila, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Mindoro provinces, northern parts of Palawan, Romblon, Aklan, and Antique from Sunday through Tuesday, August 6. Officials have advised citizens living in areas susceptible to floods and landslides to take precautionary measures.

As of 10:00 Sunday, the center of the storm was located near 16.4°N, 131.5°E, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph (34 mph) and moving north-northwestward at 15 kph (9 mph). Tropical Depression Hanna is not expected to make landfall. However, heavy rainfall, flooding, and consequent transportation and business disruptions are possible in over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in areas forecast to be affected by the storm are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
