Syria: Fighting continues in northwestern Syria August 13 /update 1
Over 60 fighters die during engagements between Syrian government forces, militant and allied forces in northwestern Syria on August 13; further fighting expected in the near term

Clashes continued in northwestern Syria on Tuesday, August 13, between Syrian government-aligned fighters and militant and allied forces. According to local reports, the engagements largely took place in Idlib and Latakia provinces and left at least 66 fighters dead. Airstrikes conducted by regime fighters reportedly killed three civilians in Khan Sheikhoun (Idlib province). Heavy shelling also occurred in the Kabana Mountains in Latakia.
This most recent round of clashes comes days after over 70 fighters were killed in the region on Saturday, August 10. Further fighting between the various forces operating in northwestern Syria are expected in the near term.
Context
To date, the Syrian conflict involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals.
