Tunisia: Protests possible following August 23 arrest of presidential candidate

On Friday, August 23, a Tunisian judge ordered the detention of media magnate and presidential candidate Nabil Karoui on charges of tax evasion and money laundering. Media reports claim Karoui was arrested as he traveled to Tunis from Béja. It is not immediately known if Karoui's arrest will impact his candidacy for the September 15 presidential election. 

Associated demonstrations and political gatherings are possible over the coming hours and days, particularly in Tunis, in the wake of Karoui's arrest. 

Context

The upcoming September 15 election seeks to replace President Beji Caid Essebsi, who died on July 25. Former speaker of parliament, Mohamed Ennaceur, is currently serving as interim president. The upcoming elections were set to take place on November 17 but were rescheduled due to Essebsi's sudden death. Nabil Karoui had been barred in July from traveling abroad amid an investigation into money laundering allegations.
