A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck approximately 58 km (36 mi) east off the coast of Luganville on Wednesday, August 7. The quake was recorded by the US Geological Survey (USGS) at 16:32 (local time) at a depth of 123 km (76 mi). Officials did not immediately issue a tsunami warning. There are no initial reports of damages.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected region over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor the situation and be prepared for aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger.
