Afghanistan: Complex attack at Green Village Camp in Kabul September 2

Event

A large-scale attack is ongoing at Green Village Camp in Kabul as of 22:00 (local time) on Monday, September 2. The attack was reportedly initiated with a large vehicle borne  improvised explosive device (VBIED), which allowed the assailants to enter the area; armed clashes are currently reported throughout the area. The situation remains complex and details are still emerging. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, although Taliban militants are highly suspected.

Context

Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.
