Indonesia: 5.7-magnitude earthquake hits Karakelong Island Sep. 11

Event

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake hit 14 km (9 mi) southeast of Melonguane on Karakelong Island (North Sulawesi) on the morning (local time) of Wednesday, September 11. The quake struck at approximately 07:32 at a depth of 10 km (6 mi). Indonesia’s Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) did not immediately issue a tsunami warning. As of 08:00, no damages from the earthquake have been reported.

Aftershocks are possible in the region over the coming hours.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger.
