5.9-magnitude earthquake strikes off Yamdena Island September 22; aftershocks possible over the coming hours
Event
A 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit 186 km (115 mi) north-northwest of Saumlaki on Yamdena Island early (local time) on Sunday, September 22. The quake struck at approximately 04:53 (local time) at a depth of 48 km (30 mi). No casualties or major material damages were immediately reported as a result of the earthquake. According to the US National Tsunami Warning Center, there is no threat of a tsunami from the earthquake.
Aftershocks are possible in the region over the coming hours.
