Indonesia: Haze impacts Riau and Jambi provinces September 11

Haze due to ongoing fires affects Riau and Jambi provinces, September 11; school to close until Thursday

Warning

Event

Hazy conditions (dust, smoke, and vapor) have reduced visibility and have created health hazards in multiple provinces as of Wednesday, September 11, notably in the Jambi and Riau provinces due to ongoing large-scale forest and agricultural fires in Sumatra island, where 448 hotspots have been recorded the day prior. Air quality has dropped to hazardous levels across Jambi and Riau, reaching a peak in Jabungtimur with an Air Pollution Index (API) of 367 on Wednesday afternoon (local time).

Local authorities asked for schools to remain closed in the cities of Pekambaru, Indragiri Hulu, Indragiri Hilir, Rokan Hulu, Siak, and Dumai from Tuesday, September 10, through Thursday, September 12. The order could be renewed later this week depending on the situation.

Context

Indonesia frequently experiences air pollution (haze) caused by forest fires between June to October. An API reading of 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 moderate, and 101-200 unhealthy.

Advice

Individuals present in Indonesia are advised to monitor Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) updates and health advisories issued by the Indonesian Department of Environment. Seek medical assistance if needed and anticipate possible transportation disruptions.
