Indonesia: Students protests continue nationwide September 25 /update 1
Students hold third day of nationwide protests September 25; heightened security presence and further protests expected in the coming day

Student protests were reported on Wednesday, September 25, in the cities of Salatiga, Subaraya, Padang, and Gorontalo, for the third consecutive day, against multiple controversial bills. More rallies are expected to take place on Thursday, September 26.
In the evening (local time) on Tuesday September 24, clashes between protesters and police forces in Jakarta wounded more than 300 people and led to the arrest of 94 protesters. Similar clashes occurred in the cities of Padang, Palu, Garut, and Bogor were police used tear gas and water canons to disperse the crowds.
Similar protests are possible in Indonesia over the coming weeks. Heightened security measures and localized transportation disruptions are likely around demonstration sites.
Context
On Monday, September 24, students across the country held rallies in multiple locations to denounce several controversial bills.
In addition to the KUHP bill, which would outlaw extramarital and gay sex, students are protesting against problematic articles in at least four other bills, including a manpower bill, a land bill, a mining bill, and a correctional procedures bill. Protesters are also demanding lawmakers to pass a bill on the eradication of sexual violence. On Friday, September 20, President Joko Widodo delayed a planned vote on the bill KUHP bill, which was originally scheduled for September 24.
