Israel: Heightened security presence during Knesset elections Sep. 17 /update 1

Authorities deploy 18,800 police officers throughout the country on September 17 to maintain security during the Knesset election; remain vigilant

Warning

Event

Heightened security measures will be in place throughout Israel on Tuesday, September 17, during snap general elections for the Knesset (parliament). Authorities will deploy an additional 18,800 police officers to maintain security, particularly near polling stations and other public areas, including beaches, parks, and other entertainment sites. According to police officials, any attempt to disrupt voting will be immediately dealt with. Tuesday has also been declared a national holiday, and additional traffic police will be operating to regulate anticipated increased road traffic. Associated business and governmental disruptions are also expected nationwide.

Political rallies and protests are possible following the result of the election; a heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be anticipated near all such demonstrations.

Context

Snap elections were scheduled after elections in April failed to produce a coalition government, and the Knesset (parliament) voted to dissolve itself in May. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking his fourth consecutive term as prime minister.

Advice

Individuals in Israel are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate a heightened security presence and localized disruptions, avoid public political demonstrations due to the risk of violence, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
