Tropical Storm Lingling strengthens to a typhoon on September 4 as it continues moving towards Okinawa prefecture; heavy rain and strong winds to hit Sakishima Islands September 4-6

Heavy rain and strong winds are expected to start impacting Okinawa prefecture on the evening (local time) of Wednesday, September 4, as Typhoon Lingling continues moving towards the region. Rainfall totals from 20-30 cm (8-12 in) are expected in the Okinawa region from Wednesday to 06:00 (local time) on Friday, September 6. The Sakishima Islands are expected to start being affected by rains, strong winds, and swells by Wednesday. As of Wednesday morning, it is unclear if the storm will directly hit islands in Okinawa prefecture. Associated flooding, transportation disruptions (including flights and ferry services), and power outages are possible in the affected areas.

As of 09:50 (local time) Typhoon Lingling is located approximately 22.5°N 124.4°E (map here) with maximum sustained winds of 130 kph (80 mph). The storm is moving northeast at 10 kph (6 mph) and mays strengthen as it passes through the region. Strong winds and high waves may also impact the Amami region and Kyushu island from Friday through Saturday, September 7, as Lingling hits South Korea.
