Japan: Tropical Storm Mitag forms in the Philippine Sea September 28

Tropical Depression 19 was upgraded to Tropical Storm Mitag on Saturday, September 28, after strengthening in the Philippine Sea. As of Saturday morning (local time), Mitag is located at approximately 15.4°N 132.1°E (map here) and is moving west-northwest at 30 kph (19 mph). According to current forecasts, Mitag is expected to continue moving north before turning northeast towards Japan and South Korea on either Sunday, September 29, or Monday, September 30. The storm may strengthen to a typhoon and is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to western Japan, particularly the Ryukyu islands, by Monday, October 1. Flooding, landslides, and a strong storm surge are anticipated in the region in the coming days. Associated transportation and power disruptions, including delays or cancelations for flights and ferry service, are also possible.
