Japan: Tropical Storm Tapah to move past Okinawa September 20-21

Large sections of Japan are expected to be affected by Tropical Storm Tapah in the coming days as it moves through the region from the Philippines Sea. Heavy rain and strong winds from the storm are forecast to start impacting Okinawa and southern Kyushu on Friday, September 20, through Sunday, September 22. Rainfall totals between 12-15 cm (5-6 in) are possible between Friday and the morning (local time) of Saturday, September 21. Dangerous sea conditions and storm surge are also expected in the coming days. Associated transportation disruptions, including to flights, rail, and ferry service, are possible. Power outages may also occur.

As of 06:00 on Friday, Tropical Storm Tapah is located at approximately 23.0°N 127.2°E (map here) with maximum sustained winds of 72 kph (45 mph). The storm is moving west at 10 kph (6 mph) and is expected to strengthen in the coming days. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Tapah will turn northeast on Saturday and may hit northern parts of the country by Monday, September 23, or Tuesday, September 24.
