The former governor of Pangasinan province Amado Espino Jr. was ambushed while driving through Barangay Magtaking in San Carlos City on Wednesday, September 11. Espino Jr. was critically injured in the attack, while five of his bodyguards were shot and killed. The assailant(s) fled the scene following the shooting. Security forces have opened an investigation to identify the person(s) responsible for the killing and have erected checkpoints in the city and adjacent towns.
A heightened security presence is expected in San Carlos City over the near term.
