Philippines: Heavy rain and thunderstorms in several areas September 16

Philippines meteorology service announces severe weather across the country on September 16; heavy rain, flooding, thunderstorms, and associated disruptions expected

Warning

Event

As of 17:00 (local time) on Monday, September 16, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued several flood warnings for areas across the Philippines. PAGASA forecasts thunderstorms and isolated heavy rains on Monday in several areas in Luzon including Bataan, Zambales, Cavite, and Metro Manila. The Administration issued an extreme flood warning and forecast heavy rains in Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, and Palawan.

Transportation (e.g. road closures, train and flight delays and cancelations), business, and communications disruptions are to be expected in flood-affected areas.

Context

Heavy rain and flooding are relatively common during the summer monsoon, which usually hits the Philippines from May to October.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rainfall.
