Syria: Russian officials announce government ceasefire in Idlib August 31

Event

On Saturday, August 31, Russia has announced that a unilateral ceasefire by Syrian government forces will be implemented in Idlib after fighting has intensified between regime forces and rebels over the recent months. According to media reports, between 7000 and 9000 civilians have fled the town of Maarat al-Num, where hostilities has been taking place. On Saturday, August 31, the US conducted airstrikes against Al-Qaeda-controlled areas in Idlib shortly after the ceasefire was announced.

Tensions between rebels and regime forces remain high in the area.

Context

Since the month of April, the Syrian government has intensified its military campaign against the last rebel-held stronghold in the country, Idlib province.

To date, the Syrian conflict involves many parties, including the Syrian, Russian, Iranian, and Turkish governments, as well as a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) often with competing goals.
