Taiwan: Sea warnings issued for Tropical Storm Mitga September 29 /update 1

Taiwanese authorities issued sea warnings for East Bashi Channel, West Bashi Channel, and the Sea of Southeast Taiwan on Sunday, September 29, as Tropical Storm Mitga has strengthened into a Severe Tropical Storm. According to forecasts as of Sunday morning (local time), Mitga is expected to move near Taiwan’s eastern coast on Monday, September 30, and Tuesday, October 1, before turning north towards South Korea and Japan. While the storm is not currently forecast to make landfall, it is possible that Mitga may hit northeastern Taiwan. Heavy rain, strong winds, and significant storm surge are anticipated throughout Taiwan, particularly in northern areas including Taipei. Associated business and transportation disruptions, including flight delays or cancelations, are also possible.

As of Sunday morning, Tropical Storm Mitga is located at approximately 18.3°N 126.8°E (map here) and is moving west-northwest at 21 kph (13 mph). Mitga is expected to continue to strengthen in the coming days and may move past Taiwan as a typhoon.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
