Heavy rain, strong winds, and storm surge are possible in Taiwan over the coming days as recently formed Tropical Storm Mitga moves northwest through the Philippine Sea. Mitga is expected to strengthen as it moves towards Taiwan, possibly becoming a typhoon, before turning northeast. The storm is forecast to affect parts of Taiwan by Monday, September 30, and Tuesday, October 1. Flooding, landslides, and damaging winds may occur as Mitga moves through the region. Associated business and transportation disruptions, including flight delays or cancelations, are also possible.

As of the morning (local time) of Saturday, September 28, Tropical Storm Mitga is located at approximately 16.1°N 132.2°E (map here) and is moving west-northwest at 34 kph (21 mph).

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
