Extinction Rebellion protesters block the William Jolly Bridge in Brisbane on October 11, causing significant traffic delays; further protests planned through October 13

Supporters of the Extinction Rebellion (XR) environmental activist group are blocking the William Jolly Bridge in Brisbane as of 11:10 (local time) on Friday, October 11. Significant traffic disruptions have been reported in the area as dozens of protesters have gathered on the bridge. Local media reported that some demonstrators have been detained by the police. It is unclear when the crowd will disperse from the area. Residual traffic disruptions are anticipated over the coming hours.
Further protests by XR supporters are expected to take place in in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide, Perth, and Hobart through Monday, October 13. In Sydney, demonstrations will also be held at Manly Beach on Friday, at Congee Beach on Saturday, October 12, and at Bondi Beach on Sunday. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are anticipated around all protest sites.

The Extinction Rebellion environmental group has organized disruptive protests around the world since November 2018 to demand increased action to address climate change issues. XR is planning a series of international protests starting the week of Monday, October 7.
