Environmental activists plan to continue blocking a mining conference in Melbourne held between October 28-31; heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions expected

The Extinction Rebellion (XR) environmental group has called on its supporters to protest and block the International Mining and Resources Conference taking place in Melbourne (Victoria state) from Monday, October 28, through Thursday, October 31. Several hundred people gathered at the conference on Tuesday, October 29, and clashed with riot police who used police horses to disperse protesters. At least one activist was injured. XR have called on its supporters to return on Wednesday, October 30, and resume the blockade.
A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected in and around the event. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
