Torrential rains cause deadly flooding across Côte d'Ivoire, including in Abidjan, on October 5-6, damaging homes and cutting off roads

Warning

Event

Torrential rains hit multiple parts of Côte d'Ivoire on Saturday, October 5, and Sunday, October 6, causing deadly flooding in some regions. Fatalities were reported in Abidjan, Ayamé, and Yopougon, along with a number of injuries. Hundreds of people have been affected and significant damage to buildings and infrastructure have been reported including in Aboisso. Roads in some areas, including around Abidjan, were cut off by the waters. Recovery efforts are ongoing and transportation disruptions are possible. Isolated thunderstorms and further rain are forecast for Abidjan through at least Sunday, October 13.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
